A Sense of Belonging

$34.00

Between 1904 and the late 1960's Hobart's Blind & Deaf Institute was the only dedicated education facility for the Deaf in the Australian state of Tasmania. It was also the birthplace of a unique Deaf culture.

For over 60 years Deaf children from around Tasmania attended the Institute. For many of the children it was little more than a prison ruled over by tyrannical teachers who cared little for their well being. From this adversity came a rich Deaf community and culture unlike any other in Australia. In 2003 some of the students returned to the institute to tell their own stories and revisit their memories of the past.

Travel with them and discover what it means to have a sense of belonging.
